Living in harmony with your body, spirit and mind is the basis of curanderismo, a Mesoamerican healing tradition with roots in Mayan and Aztec practices. "It’s an ancient holistic tradition that is still very much alive in Mexico," says Dr. Arturo Ornelas, director of Centro de Desarrollo Humano hacia la Comunidad (CEDEHC), which has been training curanderos or healers within this tradition for over 25 years. “It’s integrative. You are your own universe, and that is how we look at you to heal you.” Over 60 percent of Mexicans continue to use curanderismo for ailments ranging from depression to cancer, stomach aches to diabetes.

For the past 2 summers, the healers of CEDEHC have brought their unique healing methods to The Institute of American Indian Arts' Center for Lifelong Education (CLE) for a 2-day Indigenous Healers Festival. In 2011, due to the overwhelming response for curanderismo treatments, CEDEHC and CLE will bring back to Santa Fe not only the Healers Festival but also a 5 day hands-on Curanderismo Workshop.
Both the workshop and the festival will give participants the chance to learn and receive holistic treatments such as:
- sobadas that both heal and discern emotional and physical ailments
- spiritual cleansings that incorporate natural elements such as herbs and conch shells
- herbal tinctures that bring our bodies back into balance with the earth
- acupuncture & acupression
